Torch Lake has been named by National Geographic as the world’s third most beautiful lake for its pristine, crystal clear, multi-hued, blue water. More than 22 miles long, and 2 miles wide, Torch has an average depth of 111 feet. With approximately 1500 cottages along its shoreline, Torch Lake is the largest lake in the famous Chain of Lakes that ends in beautiful Elk Rapids. Elk Rapids is a sweet village filled with a local library and wonderful eateries and shops. Torch Lake is close to several other great northern Michigan towns including Central Lake, Traverse City, and Bellaire which makes it great place to get away to but also live year-round.
Speaking on places to eat we encourage you to visit the Dockside when you are on Torch. One of our local favorites, you will enjoy some of the best casual, American faire while sitting right on the dock overlooking the water and watching the boats navigate the channel into Clam Lake. If you’re looking for amazing food, an eclectic atmosphere, and fabulous live music then you need to look no further than the Torch Lake Café which is set just off the water in Central Lake. If you’re familiar with the micro-brew craze in Michigan, then you have undoubtedly heard of Short’s Brewery. A local and tourist favorite, this brewery and fabulous eatery attracts people from near and far and is located under thirty minutes from Torch Lake.
A couple of our other favorites pastimes in the area include visiting Mammoth Distilling and King Orchards. Mammoth Distilling has a cocktail lounge located in the Warehouse District in downtown Traverse City. They offer unique craft cocktails in a fun, down-to-earth lounge atmosphere. It’s also a great place to pick up bottles to bring home and enjoy with friends. King Orchards offers a variety of fruits and vegetables throughout the year in its friendly and charming farm market. If you are looking for a u-pick experience, King is a great stop for berries, cherries, and other fruits.
If getting out on the water is on your bucket list, then we can recommend reaching out to Dockside Motorsports for boat rentals. Getting out on the water really allows you to capture the beauty of this spectacular lake.
If you are interested in the efforts that are underway to ensure Torch Lake remains environmentally sounds and beautiful you will be pleased to know that the Torch Lake Protection Alliance is very active. They host events year-round and work tirelessly to ensure Torch is beautiful now and remains so for future generations.
